A WELL-OILED MACHINE!
Okay, I never dreamed this would be of any interest to me, or anyone, for that matter. A week ago Monday, the crews were out in droves on the golf course as they were punching the greens, a process which takes place five times a year.
From inside the tavern, it’s like you’re right there on the 18th green. As I sat inside and watched, Superintendent Terry Teets was kind enough to explain what was taking place. And so my interest grew and I am anxious to pass along so that all of you golfers may appreciate why our greens are the envy of all who have played out here.
He started by telling me there are 8 steps involved. The first is the punching itself, which is the only step that is hired out to an outside contractor, who brings in three machines. Not only does that prove to be more cost effective but also more time efficient. Second, the dirt chunks created as a result of the punching are raked off. Third, the greens are double mowed to get them as nice and smooth as possible. Then the sand is applied, as if you were on the beach itself. Next, they drag the sand to fill the holes and then roll for compaction. Like the icing on the cake, each green is then fertilized, watered and the cup cut in for the final touch.
The fact is, you are probably not as impressed because half of the curiosity was in seeing the process actually unfold…as one machine operator finished his job and left the green, another sitting in line off to the side awaiting his turn, would pop up on the green. What a well-oiled machine!
